Up Close and Personal
Kohaku Utagassen 2023
The 2023 74th edition of the show was remarkable not only for the spectacle it presented but also for its noteworthy outcome. This year, the Red Team (Akagumi) represented by women, secured a resounding victory with margins unseen in recent years.
Although the show proved entertaining, it lacked many standout moments. However, the simplicity of the production was its allure. Performers took stage with minimal gimmicks, directing the focus squarely onto their talent and ability to captivate the audience.
The theme for this year was “Borderless,” yet it was challenging to figure out how this concept expressed itself. It seemed as if there were no boundaries among performers, but the execution of internationality fell short particularly as the sole foreign band, Queen, delivered a subpar performance.
Setting aside the usual anchors, Japan showcased an overwhelming influx of new female talent that unequivocally dominated the competition. Atarashii Gakko, Ryokushaka, Sakurazaka 46, and the highly talented Ano were among the highlights. Additionally, Yoasobi secured the win with the assistance of Ai Miyon. However, on the men’s side, the White Team (Shirogumi) failed to produce any standout performances and this clearly reflected in the results.
Beyond the competition itself, the entertaining aspects stood out more prominently than in previous years. Noteworthy moments were delivered by Fujii Fumiya, Yoshiki, Higedan, the impeccable Sakamoto Fuyumi, and Ishikawa Sayuri. Clearly, the great figures who have shaped the Japanese music scene in recent years and over at least a full generation, in some cases longer.
Once again Masaru Fukuyama and Misia closed the show, prompting questions about their continued role. While both are talented, their contributions no longer define the victory for either team. If there is a call for a change, this would be it. Despite this, the overall execution of the event was good, providing a glimpse into the evolving landscape of Japanese music in yet another year.
